Tom Lake Review

This is the fifth novel by Ann Patchett that I have read. I revere Patchett, and I always wondered if she could write about any mundane topic and still make it worthwhile, not realizing she actually takes on that challenge with ‘Tom Lake’. On the upside, her writing is still of the highest level, and any writer, professional or hobbyist, can learn so much from it. There are gems of insight into human life in the quotes as well as the complete narrative, which is woven together in a clever way. The story is, like her other books, about relationships and families, growing up and looking back on time, and tied to a place. But that’s it. There is not enough substance to the story. The pacing and significance of the story picks up at the end, somewhat saving this book. But I would still describe ‘Tom Lake’ as a very beautiful yet boring read.

While their pancakes are so good (and […]

These Same Roads Again

My parents visited Shanghai for the first time in seven years, and even though the city has changed a lot, I dare say it has changed not as much as I have. Sure. On the surface of Shanghai, a lot of stores have come and gone since 2018, and large areas of the city were […]

To Taipei and Back in a Day

I got the chance to travel from Shanghai to Taipei and back in one day. Rather impractical, very tiring, but still worth it. Because you could stay at home for ten weekends and watch fifty movies, and still not have as many impressions as this. I will refrain from acting as if now I know […]
