First time on a green train

My first time on a green train, the famous (infamous?) 绿皮火车. I didn’t even realize it when buying the ticket, I should’ve bought a hard seat because I read so much about that in books about China.

The old lady only spoke about her Shanghai house and how much it’s worth per square meter, and how much money she’s going to get when the government wants to demolish it (拆钱).

The younger lady spoke about English exams in primary and middle schools and thinks learning English is a waste of time (没什么用), and her husband: “If he sleeps on his rest day, don’t disturb him.”

All right, if passengers are a reflection of their destination, then Shanghai doesn’t make the best conversations.

Secret Listening #6

Secret Listening #6

This series is called ‘Secret Listening’, from the Chinese word 偷听Tōutīng. I know this can be — and should probably be — translated as ‘eavesdropping’, but secret listening captures it better and adds a bit of jest. These little stories or remarks stood out to me, and show a more personal side of China away […]
