Today, while millions of students take their life-deciding college entrance exam (gaokao), I got my own experience of tests in China. The driving theory exam is provided to foreigners in English, but the absurd logic and translations are verbatim from the source material ā so it’s a near requirement to memorise the specific answers to the hundreds of questions, and then traffic signs are still in Hanzi. But I passed, 96 out of 100! So Iām allowed on the roads, where of course, reality is very different than in the exams ā where cutting lanes and passing left and right is the norm rather than the exception. Glad to be part of it!
