Cozy market alleys and pot stickers

We’re in  Zhuqiao Village (祝桥镇), again. I love these old streets, filled with market stands or scooters and trikes parked everywhere. These alleys are so full of life, devoid of big brands with their uniform protocols and brand guidelines. And because the whole scale of it is smaller than modern shopping malls, everything feels so cozy. People walk in pajamas, mothers carry children, delivery drivers come and go, fish are being filleted, sugar cane is cut, and a worker climbs a ladder to install some electricity wiring. When we’ll live in Europe again, it’s these lanes I’ll miss most. We’re buying a bun that the seller refers to as a potsticker (锅贴), and it’s a type I’ve never seen before.

Later that day, rapeseed fields (油菜花) Yaolu Village (腰路村) about 15 kilometers further.

Searching for meadows

Our new home in the Netherlands sits in a mundane residential area full of young families like ours. The street name comes from made (‘meadow’), still referring to a field that once lay here and now survives only in the name (just how the name Shanghai refers to a river that no longer exists). And […]

How to get a job in China (Update 2026)

There are a ton of application sites out there, but I think they’re all horrible. I searched for jobs three times: 2014 (before graduation), 2016 (desire to change jobs in the Netherlands), and 2018 (desire to move to China) — and from those three runs I do not doubt that I’ve sent well over 100 […]
