Today we visited the Former Site of Songhu Garrison Command (淞沪警备司令部旧址) — or in the words of Ash who gave the tip “the former police building”.
The place is around a hundred years old and recently renovated. There’s a gatehouse, an office, an interrogation/torture room, and places for guards and inmates to sleep. It’s part of the park that includes the much larger Longhua Martyr Memorial Site. Around the 1930s, many Communist party members were held or executed here by the Kuomintang — so today it’s a red tourism spot. That said, it was rather quiet today, so despite its dark history, it was a great place to hide from the busy city on this New Year’s Day.
