Stoics and the rain

We’re in Minghe Town (鸣鹤古镇), near Cixi (慈溪). It’s been raining the whole three-day holiday, and I figured this would provide a great photography opportunity on an otherwise crowded location, with people opting to stay home or in their hotel. But I was only half right. The alleys are indeed empty — we also had to convince ourselves to grab an umbrella and go outside, rather than just watch a movie in the guesthouse. But the rain clouds put a grey filter on everything, and every photo looks washed out.

But as they say: 来都来了, four characters that describe something like “You’ve already travelled all this way, you may as well take your time and enjoy it”.

The shopkeepers continue to stoically prepare fresh rice cakes or tofu dishes, despite having no customers to sell them to. Despite our socks already being soaked, we continue to explore, and there’s plenty to see. Beyond the rows of shops, there are parts with original buildings, most a bit run-down, others beyond repair. There are operational wells, and a building with a Communist star on its facade as well as ”毛主席万岁“ (Long Live Chairman Mao). And there’s a museum about Yue ware (越窑) and an exhibition about Chinese medicine.

When the rain stops, a few more people show up and they buy fried tofu and rice cakes, and I guess the Stoics were right.

Kunshan Diorama

Today, I’m visiting Zhengyi Old Street (正仪老街) in Kunshan — a city wedged in between Suzhou and Shanghai. This old street is a leftover slice in between other parts properly planned by the city. On the horizon, I can see construction cranes, as if they are threatening the area; ‘we are coming to you next’. […]

It’s 06:30 in the morning and I’m driving to the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles. I’ve been trying to sleep after an exhausting week at CES, but I’m too excited for this hike and can’t wait to depart the Airbnb we’re in. Every visit to the United States is an adventure. The most […]

In Praise Of Writing (And the Case Against AI)

If George Orwell, one of the best essayists, were alive today, he’d be firmly against AI. Not because of 1984 or ‘Big Brother’, but because in ‘Why I Write’, he listed four motives for writing; Historical impulse Political purpose Aesthetic enthusiasm Egoism   Neither of these motives survives if you let AI do the writing […]

Secret Listening #6

Secret Listening #6

This series is called ‘Secret Listening’, from the Chinese word 偷听Tōutīng. I know this can be — and should probably be — translated as ‘eavesdropping’, but secret listening captures it better and adds a bit of jest. These little stories or remarks stood out to me, and show a more personal side of China away […]
