Neighbourhood Temple

On Xiaohongshu, I searched for village names in the area where we live on Xiaoshongshu and found an old decaying house from the Qing Dynasty that caught my eye — just seven kilometers away!

The uploader mentioned that the building — named the Gulu Guandi Temple (顾路关帝庙) — was built in 1910, to be used as a government office. In 1961 it became a police station, and in 1985 a nursing home.  as a government office, and later a police station, before being used as a nursing home. When it was actually a temple, I’m not sure.

I looked for the street name and after a bit of cycling around in the area (Gudong Village 顾东村), I eventually found the old ‘temple’, spotted from the street because of its Guanyin Crown (观音兜). A lady asked if I was German — weirdly specific because normally they all guess either Russian or American.  When I said I was from the Netherlands she nodded: “Yeah, you guys like cycling”, and she said the building previously had people living in it, but it isn’t set for demolition right now.

She went into the old alley, and after taking some pictures, so did I. Old buildings on both sides with scooters and laundry hanging to dry, seniors taking a stroll and some young people as well. I had to duck to avoid some electrical cables, but I’m happy these places are still around in Shanghai.

Chinese New Year shopping in Majin

Everyone’s busy doing some final shopping or getting a haircut before the festival — and the weather reaching 22 °C in February helps bring people outside. Meat, spices, offerings, flowers, yoghurt, cookies, barbeque, trinkets, posters, vegetables, soap, new shoes — […]

Dutch Signs in Xixinan

Dutch Signs in Xixinan

It’s a foggy morning in Xixinan Village 西溪南村, a village near Huangshan. I’m tired of sleepless nights with a 5-month old baby, but I equally want to take this opportunity to take some photos, so I’m outside the door at 06:30. Watertowns like this are usually crowded during the day, but deserted this early. Xinanxi […]

A Dam in Yuliang

After Zaotai Village, we’re driving around the Huangshan (黄山) area, which is surrounded by dozens of historical towns, and we’re trying to pick the least touristified ones. Today we’re in Yuliang (渔梁村), a village dating back to the Sui Dynasty (1500 years ago). What was a mere settlement started to become really wealthy around 600 […]

The Last Road To Zaotai

The Last Road To Zaotai

The road becomes too small for cars to drive on, so we park, pack our bags, and continue on foot. Two donkeys are waiting where the path starts, and they — like us, are going to the abandoned village of Zaotai (皂汰村). We departed in the morning from our hostel in Sanyang (三阳镇), a village […]
