The edge of the edge

If Chuansha (川沙) — being outside of the outer ring — is on the edge of Shanghai, then this is the edge of the edge. No man’s land, just outside of Chuansha.

Some live here in old buildings (but a dog barks me away), others grow crops, and others like me take a stroll.

This basically is Chuansha’s unsupervised community garden.

One leftover sign (of a plot now upended) basically says if you steal stuff here, your whole family will be doomed.

不劳而得
自己不花钱
别想偷东西
没有好下场
全家死光光

Not from yesterday but from around the same area, with a warning of poison on the crops to fend off thieves.

本地蔬菜已打农药。如偷摘后果自负。毒!!!

Rich People Park

We’re in TaiKoo Li QianTan (前滩太古里), a brand new, high-end shopping mall near the Huangpu River in Pudong. It’s a beautiful complex with four levels, viewing bridges, walls of white steel and vertical gardens (the first I’ve seen that actually look like on an architectural drawing), and paths of bright bricks alternating with patches of […]

Torrential rain and colorful umbrellas

I was planning a bike ride, but then saw it was drizzling, so I carried Hasse outside — underneath an umbrella — to go get a coffee. Yet the rain was so heavy we just hid underneath the canopy in front of a supermarket to see some of the chaos unfold. I’ll miss these streets […]
